May 8, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), a Member of the House Agriculture Committee, extended his highest congratulations to the University of California, Davis on being recognized as the world’s best in teaching and research in the area of agriculture and forestry by QS World University Rankings; this respected ratings firm measured publication and citations in scientific journals and the program’s reputation among both academics and employers in the field. Congressman Garamendi is a former UC Regent, a lifelong rancher, and manages a pear orchard with his wife Patti at their home in Walnut Grove.

“The UC Davis faculty, students, and staff have a remarkable passion and dedication to academic excellence, and their agriculture program is the best in the world,” said Congressman Garamendi. “This number one ranking is most deserved and I commend them. For decades, UC Davis, a historic land-grant university, has developed cutting-edge farm practices, research, and local partnerships. As epitomized by the mechanical tomato harvester developed there, this work directly boosts agricultural productivity and profits.”

Garamendi added, “Northern California agriculture is vitally important to America’s economy. As the farm bill is being written in Committee, I am working with local stakeholders to add their voice to the discussion.”
