700+ Attend Congressman Garamendi's Job Fair in Woodland for Job Opportunities, Mentorship, and Resume Review

June 16, 2014

WOODLAND, CA - During a beautiful Monday afternoon, without a cloud in the sky, more than 700 jobseekers from Yolo County and beyond traveled to Woodland's One Stop Career Center hoping for an opportunity at a job.

More than 50 employers and job apprenticeship programs were in attendance. At the Job Fair, professional career counselors were on hand reviewing resumes and helping participants better present themselves to employers. The resume workshop reviewed more than 200 resumes. Members of the Workforce Development Collaborative, which includes more than 20 business, labor, job placement, and community groups, also helped make the event a success.

"When more than 1,000 people attended my Fairfield Job Fair last December, I knew we tapped into a serious need in the 3rd District," Congressman Garamendi said. "These events are always bittersweet. My staff and I are happy to do all we can to help people get a boost in their job search, but it's disheartening to know just how great the demand is for these opportunities. I've already given my staff instructions to begin planning the next one."

Today's event also featured the launch of the Career and College Success Link Program, connecting UC Davis Student Mentors with under-represented Yolo County high school students for a full day of job training and college preparation. Representatives from UC Davis's Early Academic Opportunity Program were also in attendance, giving high school students a step-by-step tutorial on best practices to get into a college program that fits each individual student’s needs.

"Education is the foundation of everything you'll do for the rest of your life," Congressman Garamendi told the mentors and high school students. "I hope you'll leave here ready to become a college prep mentor for people in your own life - your friends, family, and classmates. Let's make sure today's conversation is just the beginning of helping every student in our community reach their potential."

Congressman Garamendi's office this year also participated in job fairs in Yuba City and Marysville. In August, Congressman Garamendi's office is hosting a Social Services Fair in Lake County.
