Rep. Garamendi Announces Winner of his Homemade Mask Competition
SACRAMENTO, CA—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) announced that nine-year-old Elena from Davis is the winner of his Homemade Mask Competition.
Winner: Elena, Davis
Elena has been making masks with her mother, Noriko, since March of 2020. They've made several hundred masks, which they have donated to neighbors and various charities across Yolo County. They've also made doll masks to encourage younger neighbor children to wear theirs. Elena also made an instructional video about her process that you can view here.
"As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in our state, it is imperative that we take every possible step to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and promote safe habits throughout our community," Garamendi said.
"With that in mind, I announced a Homemade Mask Competition on December 15 for residents of California's 3rd Congressional District. I wanted to give every resident of the 3rd District an opportunity to display their homemade masks and all of the ways they are working to curb the spread of COVID-19 in their community," Garamendi continued.
"Thank you to everyone who participated in this competition by designing a mask and voting for a winner. Our district is full of incredible talent, and it is inspiring to see members of our community put their talents to work promoting safe habits that will help end the COVID-19 pandemic," Garamendi continued.
"Congratulations to Elena for winning the competition. She has an incredible artistic gift, and her efforts to promote mask-wearing and safe habits to combat COVID-19 with her classmates are an inspiration to her community. I'm honored to recognize her work, and I thank every participant for sharing their talents and making this event possible," Garamendi concluded.
