Garamendi Statement on Trump and Musk Shuttering USAID

July 1, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) issued the following statement following President Donald Trump’s closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID):

“Today, Donald Trump shuttered the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)—an agency that represents the best of who we are as a people—offering hope, saving lives, and promoting a world where freedom, peace, and prosperity can flourish.

“For me, the closure of USAID is personal. During our years of service, my wife Patti and I have witnessed the heartbreaking sight of children suffering from hunger and preventable diseases. Anyone who has seen this suffering carries an indelible mark on their heart that lasts forever. Trumps illegal and unconstitutional move to dissolve USAID proves they care more about their own power than the lives of children.

“This agency has been a cornerstone of American humanitarian efforts, from delivering lifesaving HIV/AIDS medications through PEPFAR, to distributing emergency food aid in regions facing famine, to combating deadly infectious diseases in war-torn areas. Instead of funding these lifesaving efforts and supporting USAID’s work, Trump has prioritized lining the pockets of his billionaire friends. Innocent children will pay the price.

“From countering the spread of terrorism in the Middle East to containing China’s influence in East Africa, USAID is essential to protecting America’s national interests USAID has played a critical role in keeping us safe. Dismantling it is a disservice to America and to the world.

“A more compassionate world makes us all safer—but only if we resist this Administration and the Republicans who enable it. When voters put Democrats back in charge, my colleagues and I will do everything in our power to restore USAID and its central mission: ensuring vital assistance reaches those who need it most.”
